Image
Every year, thousands of people—smart and stupid, rich and poor—fall victim to moving fraud, according to the “ Protect Your Move ” campaign by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. As if it wasn’t  already  stressful enough to pack up all your worldly goods and hire some (impressively strong) total strangers to cart them from one place to the next! But you don’t have to be scared—just be aware. Check out the most common moving scams and advice for avoiding them. Scam 1: The hostage “A mover will load your items into their truck, drive to your unload location, and demand more money on the spot before unlocking the truck or unloading your items,” says  Mike Glanz , CEO of  HireAHelper . This particular scam “is extremely common and occurs from coast to coast.” Stats from the Protect Your Move campaign show that out of the 36 million people who move every year, one in 10 reports that the moving company held furniture hostage until the customers f...

Moving Packing Tips:

Use the right size boxes. Put heavy items, like books, in small boxes; light items, like linens and pillows, in bigger ones. (Large boxes packed with heavy items are a common complaint of professional movers. They not only make the job harder but also have a better chance of breaking.)   Put heavier items on the bottoms of boxes, lighter items on top. This will help you and your movers know where every box belongs in your new pl...

They're also some of the most eye-catching. They come in a wide variety of colors, including fire-engine red and apple green, as well as earthy browns, blacks, and creams, with sparkles and veining for the look of granite or marble. But unlike natural-stone slabs, which are mined, these slabs are engineered in a factory. Their primary ingredient is ground quartz (about 94 percent), combined with polyester resins to bind it and pigments to give it color. For some designs, small amounts of recycled glass or metallic flecks are added to the mix. The resins also help make these counters stain and scratch resistant—and nonporous, so they never need to be sealed. Compare that with granite, the reigning king of high-end countertops, which typically requires a n...

Yes, we’re talking about those massive six to eight feet in height, long case, freestanding, weight-driven clocks (also referred to as pendulum clocks), which are widely appreciated for their decorative and  antique value . If you have ever had a chance to take a close look at those mechanical pieces of art, you’ve probably noticed their fine ornaments, stylish finishing and complicated, fine-tuned clockwork comprised of numerous gears and springs. One question naturally occurring, is  how to properly move such a heavy and delicate timekeeping device , whether in home, across the street to a new home, moving to a new city nearby, or even shipping it overseas without doing any harm to its exterior, glass parts and fine mechanics.
